That is just as true today as it was during the territorial era.

The Biggest Mistake Independent Promotions Make

Many independent promotions unknowingly become carbon copies of each other.

Same style logo.
Same posters.
Same generic names.
Same “extreme” matches.
Same wrestlers.
Same social media posts.
Same format.

After a while, fans stop seeing promotions as unique experiences and instead view them as interchangeable.

That is dangerous.

Because if fans can get essentially the same product somewhere else, they will usually choose whichever company:

• Is closest

• Has bigger names

• Has a better venue

• Has stronger production

• Or simply markets better

If your promotion does not stand out, then you become replaceable.

• Legends appearances

Whatever it is — own it.

A promotion without identity becomes forgettable.

The Territorial Era Understood Branding Better Than Many Modern Indies

During wrestling’s territorial days, every promotion had its own personality.

Memphis wrestling felt different from Mid-South.
Mid-South felt different from Jim Crockett Promotions.
World Class felt different from ICW.
ICW felt different from the WWF.

Fans knew what kind of experience they were buying.

Today, many independent promotions all feel the same because everybody is chasing everybody else’s formula instead of building their own.

Ironically, the easiest way to stand out in modern wrestling may actually be to slow down and return to fundamentals.

How To Stand Out From Other Promotions

1. Build an Actual Brand — Not Just a Logo

A logo is not a brand.

A brand is the feeling people get when they hear your company’s name.

Ask yourself:

• What does our promotion represent?

• What kind of wrestling do we present?

• What kind of audience are we targeting?

• What emotions should fans feel at our events?

Your posters, commentary, music, lighting, social media, ring announcing, and even your ticket design should all reflect the same identity.

Consistency builds recognition.

Recognition builds loyalty.

2. Tell Stories People Care About

Matches alone rarely create loyal fans.

Characters and stories do.

Fans return when they become emotionally invested.

That does not require million-dollar production. It requires creativity and patience.

The best independent promotions make fans care about:

• rivalries

• championships

• betrayals

• redemption arcs

• underdogs

• hometown heroes

Give people something to follow beyond “good matches.”

3. Stop Trying To Be WWE

One of the biggest mistakes small promotions make is trying to imitate national television wrestling.

You cannot out-WWE WWE.

And fans do not expect you to.

Independent wrestling works best when it embraces what makes it different:

• intimacy

• accessibility

• authenticity

• local identity

• passion

Fans love feeling connected to a product.

Lean into that.

4. Treat Your Promotion Like a Business

Many promotions fail because they operate emotionally instead of professionally.

Standing out also means:

• running on time

• advertising consistently

• having clean venues

• treating talent professionally

• communicating clearly

• maintaining a strong online presence

The promotions that last usually become woven into their local communities.

The Truth About Survival in Independent Wrestling

The harsh reality is this:

Not all 32 Kentucky wrestling promotions will still exist five years from now.

Some will quietly disappear.

Some will burn bright for a year and collapse.

Some will run only sporadically.

A few will survive.

And the ones that survive will almost always be the ones that:

• built loyal audiences

• created a recognizable identity

• treated wrestling like a real business

• and gave fans something different from everybody else

In a crowded market, being average is dangerous.

Being memorable is everything.

And sometimes the biggest risk in wrestling is not being different enough.

Those numbers have steadily increased over time.

That alone does not prove dishonesty. Independent wrestling promotions constantly open, close, merge, split, and rebrand.

However, no independently verifiable documentation currently appears to support the exact “156 promotions in 50 countries” figure.

What AIWF Does Appear To Be

To be fair, the AIWF is not simply a fictional organization.

The group has legitimate roots dating back years in the Mid-Atlantic and Appalachian independent wrestling scene, particularly in:

• North Carolina,

• Virginia,

• West Virginia,

• and surrounding regions.

There is evidence of:

• real wrestling events,

• active championship belts,

• international title defenses,

• and working relationships with some overseas promotions and talent.

Multiple wrestling sources also acknowledge that AIWF-branded championships have appeared internationally in places such as:

• Canada,

• the United Kingdom,

• Mexico,

• Portugal,

• and elsewhere.

So the organization itself is certainly real.

The debate centers not on whether AIWF exists, but whether the scale of its claimed worldwide network is accurately represented.

And until such documentation is provided, the numbers remain more promotional than independently confirmed.

Professional wrestler Ludwig Kaiser, whose real name is Marcel Barthel, was arrested in Orlando on May 20, 2026, following an alleged altercation that reportedly took place last month at an apartment complex elevator.

According to reports, the incident occurred on April 23, 2026, at the Paramount on Lake Eola Apartments in downtown Orlando. Authorities allege that a man identified as Richard Reap entered an elevator where Barthel and a woman were already present. The encounter reportedly became tense after the couple allegedly engaged in what witnesses described as an overly aggressive public display of affection.

After exiting the elevator, Reap reportedly confronted the pair and allegedly told them to “have some manners.” Investigators claim the verbal exchange escalated into a physical confrontation in which Barthel allegedly punched and shoved the man to the ground. The alleged victim reportedly suffered a visible scratch to the head during the incident.

Police reportedly used surveillance footage and witness identification in the investigation before filing a misdemeanor battery charge against the WWE performer.

Barthel was booked into the Orange County Jail on May 20 and later released after posting a reported $1,000 bond. Reports indicate that he has pleaded not guilty to the charge and is seeking permission to continue international travel obligations related to his wrestling career while the case moves through the legal process.

The arrest comes just days before a major wrestling event featuring Kaiser in a Mask vs. Mask match against Original El Grande Americano scheduled for May 30 in Monterrey, Mexico.
